A Clean, Well-Lighted Place Essay example -- Literary Analysis, Ernest
ââ¬Å" A Clean, Well-Lighted Placeâ⬠by Ernest Hemingway is a simplistic short story in which he narrates a scene in a Cafe, where the main characters are two waiters and an old man. In the story, Hemingway hardly created a background for his characters, but this was part of his minimalist writing style. He wanted to create a story that was straightforward to the reader, and in which the reader could easily understand his attitude. His purpose for writing the story was to expose his feelings on society, politics, and the individual at the time. These feelings could be characterized by three main words: desperation, disillusionment, and loneliness. Through all of the characters in his story, the reader was able to obtain one of these feelings. However, when I read the story I wanted to know more about the characters to be able to establish a connection with them. I wanted to know how and why did each of them acquired those feelings? Therefore, I decided to change the point of vi ew of the story from third- person- limited to first- person. Unlike Hemingway, I included more personal details about one of the main characters, in this case the old man, whom I consider to be the most mysterious character of the three. This way, I could make the reader relate more to the emotions conveyed by the story. Consequently, by showing the reader the old man's background, I made Hemingway's attitude of his original story stronger, and also establish a connection between the reader and the character(s). However, I also had to modify some of the plot, and language to make my scene coherent and relevant to my point of view. The most drastic change I made to Hemingwayââ¬â¢s short story was the change of point of view from third- person- limited to first -per... ... When I first read ââ¬Å"A Clean, Well-Lighted Placeâ⬠by Ernest Hemingway, I thought that I lacked a connection to the story. I did not feel like I knew the characters, which left me with no connection to them and intrigued me as well, especially the old man. Why did Hemingway leave out backgrounds to his characters? This motivated me to write my scene through the old man's point of view. I felt that with the change of point of view to first- person, the reader would feel more attracted to the story, and at the same time I could keep Hemingwayââ¬â¢s attitude of despair and disillusionment intact, maybe even make it stronger. With my part of the puzzle, I felt more at peace with his original story, and I was able to establish a relationship between Hemingway (as a writer) and me (as a reader). I was able to experience his motivation for writing ââ¬Å"A Clean, Well-Lighted Placeâ⬠.

Air France essay
Describe how you would assess how a row (keyword-engine pair) is performing and how to manage it To figure out how a row (keyword-engine pair) is performing, we need to do cost-benefit analysis first. In other words, since companyââ¬â¢s goal is to sell tickets and create value, it would be useful to assess by measuring dollar amount earned from a dollar of cost (= Amount/Total cost). However, the row is already in ascending order of dollar amount relative to total cost. Also, there are only 368 data out of more than 4,000 data overall. Therefore, looking at the sales figure only is not the best way to assess keyword-engine pair performance.I took out all the numbers that have no conversion rate. That means, it did not generate any sales and these will not be helpful in assessing the performance. Then, among those numbers with conversion rates, I only looked at the numbers of which the amount is bigger than the cost. Otherwise, company is losing money whenever it pays advertising. Then, I multiplied average position with click through rate and conversion rate so that to calculate how people relatively choose to pick up Air France and buy tickets via website. This will tell how its keyword performs with search engine to generate sales over cost. However, to manage well, we also have to consider Ad rank. QS is determined by click thru rate and bid strategy is actually average CPC. If we multiply together, we can get Ad rank. To perform well, we need have higher click thru rate rather than higher CPC. Therefore, we also need to look at relative CPC assuming same position. Thatââ¬â¢s why I looked at other numbers without conversions rate too. Apply your performance metrics to each of the keyword-engine pairs (i. e to each of the rows) and identify the ââ¬Å"top 10â⬠keyword-engine pairs to pursueà Below are the top 10 results based on performance metrics that I mentioned above. However, we can see that most keywords already contain france . I believe pe ople who typed france will look at Air France site automatically, so the company should not focus highly on the word. I confirmed this logic by looking at numbers without conversion rate. See below. And also, the first one should be an outlier, since only one click generated 900% of sales. So, I calculated again filtering these two words out. Below is the result. As we can see from above, both ââ¬Å"cheapâ⬠and ââ¬Å"parisâ⬠are a good match with ââ¬Å"Googleâ⬠.

My Passion in Singing
My Life Without music, my life would be a mistake because I exist in a world filled with songbirds. I live in a world filled with colorful hopes and dreams. I dream to climb the ladder of fame but I realize that living simply is my happiness while doing my very best to achieve my dreams no matter how high or low they are. I have many affiliations since elementary and most of these are into singing because it is one way of expressing myself. When I was a child, I already use my talent in singing because one of my dreams is to make my name shine in lights and make my faces known to everyone in the world.I started singing in front of a crowd when I was 6 years old. Each one in our class was required to sing, and I was amazed at how my classmates and teacher admired my voice. That was the day when I found out that there was something special in me. That was the day when I started to dream of singing in front of more people and not just in front of the mirror. Because of that event, teach ers and student leaders approach me whenever there is an event in our school and they ask me to render a song number. I always agree and prepare. At the end of each song number, I always feel glad. I know I made others happy by entertaining them, and I made myself happy because I just had another chance to sing in front of a huge crowd. Nothing makes me happier than getting that experience and making myself more prepared to chase my bigger dream which is to become a famous singer. I always sang Japanese songs when I was elementary and through this, I became a regular singer at Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku for three years. I am also a cantor and psalmist at San Pedro Cathedral Parish.I have been part of Star Magic Davao since 2011 because I believe that it could also pave my way to being known nationwide. I takes part in their workshop and treats these as my training. I also believe that these will equip me with the right skills I will need in order to reach my dream. I am doing everythin g I can to achieve my dreams but staying humble. My angelic voice is a God-given gift so I must share this gift to everyone and not to hide it. I believe that through singing, I please our Creator. My passion for singing, coupled with love for music comes from deep within my heart, mind, and soul. Singing is my cigarette, alcoholic drink, my escape from anger and pain. I really love singing because I think it is not just an art, it is a means of expressing one's emotion. Today, I am just a typical young girl but with all my efforts, I may be seen as a star in the future. There may be obstacles standing in my way but I hope I can go through these smoothly and succeed in reaching my dreams.

Hamlet Essay â⬠Misogyny Essay
Misogyny, by definition, is the hatred of women and girls. In Hamlet by William Shakespeare, misogyny affects women in negative ways that both impact how a woman is portrayed along with how these stereotypes and controls influence her actions and ultimately lead to her demise. Gertrude and Ophelia, the only major female characters of this play, are both women who must confront various factors and adverse effects of misogyny. Shakespeare uses the patriarchal system to suggest the effects of menââ¬â¢s misogynistic behavior towards women. The patriarchal system allows men to objectify women by using them as pawns, and gives men the power to control and manipulate women as they please. Shakespeare demonstrates this through the words and actions of Polonius, Opheliaââ¬â¢s father. Firstly, the patriarchal system gives Polonius the power to treat Ophelia like an object and control her actions. Claudius, Gertrude, and Polonius all come together in this scene to make a plan on how to di scover why Hamlet has gone so mad. In their conversation, Polonius says, ââ¬Å"At such a time Iââ¬â¢ll loose my daughter to him.â⬠(II.ii.174) Here, the word ââ¬Å"looseâ⬠emphasizes the cynical unconcern that he has for his daughter. The use of ââ¬Å"looseâ⬠in this context is also a pun. Loose means cow, so Shakespeare uses this line as a metaphor to say that Polonius is soon going to ââ¬Å"looseâ⬠his daughter, a cow, to a bull, who is none other than Hamlet. Polonius does this again while talking to Ophelia about how she shouldnââ¬â¢t believe Hamletââ¬â¢s words or rely on any of his promises because according to Polonius, Hamlet doesnââ¬â¢t truly love Ophelia; he simply has a strong lust for her at the moment. ââ¬Å" Ay, springes to catch woodcocks. I do know, / When the blood burns, how prodigal the soul/ Lends the tongue vows,â⬠Polonius explains. (I.ii.120) Shakespeare uses diction here to emphasize what Polonius thinks of his daughter. ââ¬Å"Springesâ⬠are snares to catch fools and a ââ¬Å"woodcockâ⬠is a bird that is easily taken. In simple terms, Polonius is comparing Ophelia to this foolish type of bird, saying that she is easy to get and fool. Once again, he compa res her to an animal ââ¬â objectifying her and bringing her down from her status as a human and woman in society. Shakespeare demonstrates how sexuality is portrayed as something crude and wrong through the actions of Queen Gertrude. Hamletââ¬â¢s aversion towards his motherââ¬â¢s sexuality upkeeps the idea that sexuality is obscene. Hamlet is absolutely disgusted by his mother and while talking to himself, exclaims: ââ¬Å"O, most wicked speed, to post/ With such dexterity toà incestuous sheets!â⬠(I.ii.158-159) Gertrudeââ¬â¢s sexuality makes her inappropriate because she remarried with ââ¬Å"wicked speed.â⬠The word ââ¬Å"wickedâ⬠has a negative connotation to it. It implies that Gertrudeââ¬â¢s speed in remarrying was bad and evil because she betrayed King Hamlet so quickly and the quickness of her actions makes her seem sexually vulgar. Hamlet is disgusted by the fact that his mother was both quick and agile with becoming incestuous. Furthermore, the idea that sexuality is vulgar is further demonstrated when the ghost of King Hamlet reveals his disgust towards Gertrudeââ¬â¢s incest. ââ¬Å"So lust, through to a radiant angel linked, / will state itself in a celestial bed/ And prey on garbage.â⬠(I.v.59-60) Even though sexuality can be pure like a ââ¬Å"radiant angel,â⬠it will glut (ââ¬Å"sateâ⬠) and ââ¬Å"prey on garbage.â⬠Shakespeare uses imagery with these words to reveal that Gertrude is garbage and that she is searched for like junk by a scavenger. The word ââ¬Å"sateâ⬠shows Gertrude as a gluttonous animal, implying that her sexuality makes her an animal; thus sexuality is vulgar. Shakespeare emphasizes that virginity is essential to a womenââ¬â¢s value in society, for it makes her both pure and desirable. Opheliaââ¬â¢s conversations with her brother Laertes and her father Polonius provide evidence that both Laertes and Polonius place a very high value of Opheliaââ¬â¢s sexuality and her obligation to protect her virginity. Laertes and Ophelia have one last conversation before he departs to France. He gives her advice about rejecting lust and desire in order to keep her virginity and thereby make herself honorable. In their conversation with each other, Laertes warns Ophelia to not let herself be seduced and lose her honor by losing her virginity. He says, ââ¬Å"The canker galls the infants of the spring/ Too oft before their buttons be disclosed.â⬠(I.ii.42-43) Shakespeare uses some interesting metaphors in this scene to stress the value of Opheliaââ¬â¢s maidenhood by comparing it to a flower. The phrase ââ¬Å"infants of the springâ⬠im plies both innocence and fertility. This metaphor compares women, in this case Ophelia; to new spring flowers whose buds still havenââ¬â¢t been opened (still virgins). Laertes is saying that Ophelia is still young so she must resist her desires in order to save her virginity; doing so would also save her honor, which is something that is very valued especially for women in society. Polonius also warns Ophelia about the value of her virginity, butà for other reasons. Unlike Laertes, who is more concerned about Opheliaââ¬â¢s happiness and emotional well-being, Polonius is more focused on himself and the respect of his family. He says to her: ââ¬Å"You do not understand yourself so clearly/ As it behooves my daughter and your honor.â⬠(I.ii.102-103) Here, Polonius is saying that Ophelia does not yet understand how to behave in a way that is suitable for someone who is his daughter and who is under his name and household. He is afraid that if Ophelia loses her virginity, she will disgrace the family and hurt his reputation; all in all, he fears that the respect of his family will be damaged. This makes it evident that Shakespeare believed th at along with altering a womanââ¬â¢s reputation and social standing, womenââ¬â¢s chastity also affected menââ¬â¢s social standing in society. Seeing that virginity is given such high value, Shakespeare also clearly demonstrates the consequences that a woman experiences by losing her virginity before marriage. He uses Opheliaââ¬â¢s character to illustrate how losing a womanââ¬â¢s virginity causes her to lose relationships with people she loves, her social status and reputation, her sanity, and ultimately, her life. OPHELIA. By Gis and by Saint Charity, Alack, and fie, for shame! Young men will do ââ¬â¢t, if they come to ââ¬â¢t. By Cock, they are to blame. Quoth she, ââ¬Å"Before you tumbled me, You promised me to wed.â⬠He answers: ââ¬Å"So would I ââ¬â¢aââ¬â¢ done, by yonder sun, An thou hadst not come to my bed.â⬠(IV.v.59-67) After losing her father, Ophelia has become insane and is singing this song while reminiscing about the love that she and Hamlet once had. She has been driven to this madness because of her instability after her father is killed and Hamlet leaves her. Slowly everyone she loves is drifting away and she feels that is because she didnââ¬â¢t listen to her father and brother about protecting her virginity before, so now she is suffering the consequences.à In this scene, she is specifically singing about how Hamlet did not keep his promise of marrying her after they had slept together. ââ¬Å"Young men will doââ¬â¢t if they come toââ¬â¢t,/ By cock, they are to blame,â⬠she explains. In other words, she is saying that men will have sex whenever they have the opportunity. With the phrase ââ¬Å"by cock, they are to blame,â⬠she is saying that the ââ¬Å"cockâ⬠represents the vulgar corruption of God because they are the ones who take a womanââ¬â¢s virginity. Furt hermore, Hamlet does not want to marry Ophelia anymore because she isnââ¬â¢t a virgin and all men want to marry a woman who is pure and untouched. Opheliaââ¬â¢s madness in this scene expresses how losing her virginity led her to insanity because she was incapable of dealing with losing all of her loved ones. Additionally, she loses any respect that she had, along with her social status, because she has done something that is completely unacceptable for a young woman to do in such a society in that time. All of this ultimately causes Ophelia to take her own life as a way to end the chain reactions of heartbreak and misery that she has had to experience, all because she decided to go and lose her virginity to Hamlet. In conclusion, Shakespeare uses the patriarchal system to suggest menââ¬â¢s ability to manipulate women, and ultimately gives an explanation of the reactions to menââ¬â¢s misogynistic behavior towards women. Common stereotypes of women gravely impact womenââ¬â¢s perception of themselves and shape women to fit under certain archetypes in a patriarch-run society. Misogyny destructively affects the fate of ââ¬Å"Womanâ⬠and, slowly but surely, leads to the deterioration of her idea of self and identity.

Hale, Duane. Cyrus N. Ray: The Abilene Man
Cyrus Newton Ray was a man who found his sole purpose of fulfillment by finding evidences of artifacts from the past. His original studies were focused on the medical field: osteopathy, which he received a degree for in June 2, 1909. It is bizarre to know that archaeology was not Cyrus N. Rayââ¬â¢s field of study. He has found a society called ââ¬Å"Texas Archeological and Paleontological Society (Texas Archeological Society) in 1928. Because he was an amateur at archaeology, his name is well known in the Texas archaeological world. Osteopathy and the finding of human skulls have one thing in common: the relevance to the bones. The huge field difference between osteopathy and archaeology is very different, but this only concludes one thing. History has intrigued Cyrus N. Ray so much that it has caused him to switch his professions from the medical field to archaeology. He feels content when he is slowly discovering a little bit of history every time he finds an artifact. Content: Cyrus Newton Ray was an amateur at archaeology because that field of study was not even his original profession. His original profession was osteopathy but because he got drawn in one day by reading an article by Dr. Harold J. Cook, ââ¬Å"which described the finding of arrowheads embedded in gravel with the skeleton of a buffalo of an extinct Pleistocene species at Colorado City, Texasâ⬠Ever since then, he has discovered many different artifacts that made him well known in the Texas world of archaeology due to the fact that Texas was one of the only state where archaeology was not at importance. His determination for archaeology was full of willpower that even through the Great Depression, Ray still used his own money to publish articles about his current findings. Cyrus N. Ray wanted everyone to know about his findings because he wanted everyone to be fascinated by the history tied to the artifacts. Critique: From reading this article, I felt as though the author, Duane Kendall Hale, did have a noticeable biasness. It was a little misleading because the author gives two points of view on Cyrus N. Ray. Most of the time, the author continuously says throughout the article, that some of Rayââ¬â¢s discoveries were credited to others. And many of the other archaeologists would completely not mention Rayââ¬â¢s name when reporting their findings. For the author, he feels as though this isnââ¬â¢t fair for Cyrus N. Ray. But then, the author mentions that Ray kept his location secretive, and because of that, future chances of discoveries were lowered because he kept his locations confidential. Also, the author concludes that Ray was difficult to work with, and his personality was not very compatible with others. I was convinced by the authorââ¬â¢s thesis because history is so important to our society right now. Presently, we just canââ¬â¢t focus on the present and disregard the past forever. The past happened for a reason and it is there for us to acknowledge it. So for someone with a completely different profession like Cyrus N. Ray, it was a great thing for him to go into archaeology to figure out the past even more. This passage was relatively easy to read because it was a biography, but with the biased voice of the author thrown in, it made it a little harder to comprehend.

Intellectual Property Rights Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Intellectual Property Rights - Essay Example More specifically, since this case involves a symbol which would denote a product, it is considered as a copyrighted symbol. To the original creator, the law permits him to decide the terms and conditions of the sale of the property in order to earn financial benefits. He advertises the work and sells nonexclusive rights of his logo to six different entities at 29 dollars a piece. The non-exclusivity of the sale shows that he still owns the logos; he holds the original rights to the logos. B would, therefore, be compelled to agree to the terms fronted by A in order to gain ownbership of the same. In this case, B seeks to do away with the logo created by A, this would still compel the former to agree to the same terms. B creates a logo one year later and sells it to C. However, the logo is has striking semblances to that created by A yet B alludes that it is an independent creation. B sells the logo innocently ignorant of the fact that his logo resembles that created by A one year ear lier. However, the assumption is that A was the original creator of the logo. A legal solution to the issue comes in the form of B seeking to purchase Aââ¬â¢s logo. The case presented herein requires clear legal outlines to guide the process of purchase of Aââ¬â¢s logos. By extension, it should not be forgotten that Bââ¬â¢s logo only showed similarity to Aââ¬â¢s creation and that it was not necessarily an act of infringement on a copyright. Besides, there are no legal stipulations which determine similarities of copyright symbols. It is out of Bââ¬â¢s own will that he seeks to sort out an apparent similarity in the two logos by buying Aââ¬â¢s. ANALYZES 1. Trying to buy the rights from A is the most objective move since B cannot register the same logo which A created a year earlier. This is despite the two logos being not the same. B needs to buy all the exclusive rights from A. This would save B the possible embarrassment from the similarity in the two logos. Howev er, the sale is complex because A had sold some nonexclusive rights to six other clients whom he met on the internet. The other clients might pose a legal challenge. However, if they have not started using the logo, we should look for ways to cancel the licensing agreement with the other six people. Therefore we kindly ask for the licencing agreement so that we can find clasues that could be in favour of B. Also, C will require the exclusive rights of his client, B. 2. C may sue B and they would be justified to take such a move. However, such a move would not be advisable. This is because in spite of the similarity in the two logos, Bââ¬â¢s work could be genuinely out of creativity and not from copying Aââ¬â¢s work. The alternative would be for C to go with the buy out as B seeks to do. In addition, proving what infringement has occurred when the two logos are compared bears no ground. The only legal proof would be a patent which must have been legally documented. In the absen ce of such, there is no legal test which is admissible in a legal proceeding. B should, therefore, try to prevent a court case. The idea of buying out the logo from A would be the best decision. This might also go well with A who has earned little money from the creation. It is documented that A put up the logo for thirty dollars for a single and an exclusive use. Consequently, Bââ¬â¢s offer of one thousand Euros would be a better deal given the previous pays that A had hoped for. 3. D might raise a complaint against C in case it uses the logo without sorting out the issue of similarity.
Catastrophes, Cultures, and the Angry Earth Essay
Catastrophes, Cultures, and the Angry Earth - Essay Example ââ¬Å"The waters came and took our house and all of our belongings. Now we have returned and officials tell us that we canââ¬â¢t rebuild here, our land will be used for something else. This is our land, we want it back, and we want our lives back.â⬠-----Anonymous Survivor in Aceh, 2005 ââ¬Å"We would all love to see Tokyo rebuilt along the lines of Paris or Berlin, but do we have the resources? No! Why should people in rural areas who suffer each year, toil and sweat yet more for those of Tokyo? Rural areas need attention too, they are the foundation of the nation.â⬠-----Japanese Parliamentarian, 1923 Answer: In the course, the main idea being taught revolves around the nature of the human society specifically during the time of catastrophes and disasters. Based on the quotation that introduced the course according to the historian Marc Bloch, calamities are instruments that help see, study, and analyze the nature of human society. This can be attributed to the fact that as a human body, society has the capacity to maintain, to operate, and to defend itself. It also has the capacity to rebuild once it had been destroyed. The only question in the process of coping with the different forms of trials and disasters is the manner by which it can be undertaken. The course is aimed to open the minds of the students to the need for larger and more holistic objectives in the society which can help understand the reason for the need for continuous improvement of the different groups in the society such as political, economic, and social institutions. Due to the continuous exposure to natural disasters, human society had learned to establish ways and means to cope with the effects of calamities and disasters. The lessons of the pasts and the technologies of the present are used as tools to plan and to cope with possible dangers in the future. Discussion of the First Quote: Calamity in Aceh The first quote was expressed by an anonymous survivor in the calamity that affected Aceh in 2005. Based on the quote, aside from the natural calamity which is the flood that affected many lives, there are other issues that hinder the process of recovery and reconstruction. Upon the return of the survivors to their land, officials prohibited reconstruction. Thus, the aside from the fact that the natural calamity took their home, the social and political issues and policies affected their land. There are different issues that can be discussed in the quote since it expressed a view of the different dynamics that can occur in times of disasters. One is the background of the disaster in Aceh. Aceh, formally known as Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (or the State of Aceh, Abode of Peace) is considered as one of the most Islamic region of Indonesia. The culture and traditions of Aceh is strongly based on Islamic principles and practices. For that matter, religion can be considered as one of the guiding view in times of major calamities and natural disasters (Clarke, Fanany, and Kenny, 2010, p. 30). Due to the influence of Islam in the culture of Aceh, it is considered as one of the main context in terms of the study of the event of 2005. The Islamic law, or sharia, is known to affect the post-tsunami state of Aceh resulting to the question on the re construction and rehabilitation efforts in the area. The political policy in the state had been considered as one of the most highlighted factor in the rehabilitation problems since it is the only state in the country that applies Islamic law. The application of religious laws on political context can be considered as a point of continuous criticism since it can greatly affect the road to reconstruction of Aceh (Clarke, Fanany,
